Many of Oregon’s universities boast distinguished researchers who forge public-private partnerships in sectors such as nanotechnology, wave energy and biobased products. Students have the chance to learn from and work with top-notch faculty invested in training the next generation of inventors and entrepreneurs. To further support student research and innovation, Oregon’s institutions provide generous educational resources and opportunities for students to connect directly with businesses and communities.

Oregon’s Signature Research Centers build on the state’s university and industry expertise, environmental assets and unique talent and are demonstrated below.

The VertueLab merges innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and impact investing to address and resolve global environmental challenges. 

The Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) puts nanotechnology and microtechnology to work in electronics, energy generation, environmental conservation and medical devices.

The Oregon Translational Research and Drug Development Institute (OTRADI) screens compounds and supports the collaborative development of pharmaceuticals that fight infectious diseases.

BUSINESS

Located on the Pacific Rim, Oregon holds national and global competitive advantages in areas such as clean technology, outdoor gear and apparel, advanced manufacturing, and forestry and wood products.

It is the home of the “Silicon Forest”, a concentration of high-tech, “small-tech,” and semiconductor companies that have made a name for Oregon across the globe. The presence of cutting-edge, world-renowned companies allows students across disciplines to take advantage of many professional opportunities, such as internships.

TRADE

Oregon is the 21st largest exporting state in the U.S., exporting $27.7 billion of goods in 2023.

The state’s largest trading partner is Mexico, followed by China, Canada, Malaysia and Ireland. Further, about 20 percent of Oregon’s exports are from small- and medium-sized businesses.

EDUCATIONAL EXCHANGE

In 2023, Oregon hosted 7,379  international students, with the top five countries of origin being China, India, Canada, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia. Oregon also sent nearly 3,042 students abroad, in the form of exchange programs and language and cultural immersion programs.
