School curriculum summary

Academic programs run on a quarter-system comprised of three 10 week terms: fall, winter, and spring. Summer Session offerings are generally 8 weeks, but can be different formats. A full-time undergraduate student load is 12-18 credits, 9-16 credits for graduate students. International students must be enrolled full-time to maintain their F1 visa status.

At SOU, you will have 33 majors and more than 100 areas of study to choose from. For a full list of SOU’s academic programs, visit SOU Academics.

Students who are admitted to Southern Oregon University who lack the required English proficiency score, will be admitted into the Intensive English Program (IEP). English instruction will be given prior to beginning studies at the university level. At each level, students learn grammar, reading, writing and speaking. Upon completing the highest level of English instruction in the IEP, students will continue into their degree programs without having to take the IELTS or TOEFL exam.

SOU specializes in small classes that allow students to work closely with faculty. Almost all classes at SOU are taught by faculty members, not graduate teaching assistants. SOU has a 23:1 student-faculty ratio and an average of 21 students in each class.

SOU faculty members are highly trained specialists engaged in teaching, research, and related academic work. They come from colleges and universities throughout the United State and from foreign countries. Eighty-two percent of SOU’s faculty have the highest degrees in their respective fields.
